Quase Lá & Almost There...

Ontém levamos o Antônio à Pulmonologista Dra. Sterni, que ficou maravilhada em ver nosso pequeno guerreiro tão bem e imediatamente fez algumas mudanças, cortando os medicamentos Flovent (inalador) e Prilosec (para o refluxo)... Com isso, em menos de um ano desde que veio para casa, não precisaremos dar nenhum medicamento ao Antônio, a não ser pela multivitamina!

Além disso, a Dra. Sterni acha que ele deve passar no próximo teste do sono -- que está agendado para meados de junho... se isso acontecer, ele não precisará receber mais oxigênio à noite para dormir, e finalmente ele poderá ter uma vida completamente normal, sem precisar daqueles tubos plásticos presos no nariz, ou do cinturão apertando seu peito para segurar os eletrodos do monitor cardíaco no lugar certo.

E o melhor de tudo, nosso Antônio está liberado para ir para a creche!!! Quando ainda no UTIN, as enfermeiras nos colocaram um medo danado, pelo o risco de contrair doenças das outras crianças, mas a Dra. Sterni acha que agora o Antônio só terá a ganhar pelo contacto com outras crianças -- tanto no aspecto do desenvolvimento, quanto para melhorar seu sistema imunológico.

Voltaremos à ver a Dr. Sterni em setembro, para mais uma avaliação antes do proximo inverno, que marca chegada da temporada das gripes e viroses, e portanto pode fazer com que tenhamos que modificar a rotina mais uma vez... mas tudo bem, isso faz parte da vida!

Yesterday we took Antonio to see his Pulmonologist, Dr. Sterni. She was astonished for seeing him doing so well and immediately made some changes, cutting out two of his medicines -- Flovent (inhaler) and Prilosec (for reflux). With this change, in less than a year since he came home, we will not need to give any medicine to Antonio -- the exception being his daily multivitamin!

Also, Dr. Sterni believes that Antônio should pass the next sleep study -- which is scheduled for mid-June. If this happens, he will not need to have any more oxygen to go to sleep at night, so finally Antônio will have a completely normal life, without the need for those plastic tubes going in his nose, nor for the belt that compresses his chest all night long to hold the electrodes of the cardiac monitor at the right place.

And the best of all, is that Antonio is free to go to start going to child care! When still in the NICU, the nurses there gave us a scare that, for the increased risk of Antônio contracting illnesses from the other children we would need to keep him home for years, but Dr. Sterni finds that now he will actually benefit from that contact with other children -- not only for helping him develop his social skills, but also to improve his immune system.

We will be back to see Dr. Sterni again in September, for another evaluation before the next winter and before the next flu season -- so we can make any necessary changes to his routine for his "survival" during the colder months.
