Dobrinhas & Baby Fat

-

All is well with Antonio, despite the fact he is making the nurses work very hard to make him eat.

About that, we had a very good conversation with the Nurse Practitioner today. Valerie told us that Dr. Mike's directives got diluted over the weekend, making things a little confusing.

According to Valerie, Dr. Mike wants that Antonio's routine in the NICU to be a close as possible of what it would be at home, so basically he can eat whenever and as much he wants as long as he eats more than 420 ml/day (150 ml/kg weight).

For sure this lack of routine will make the nurse's lives a little more difficult, specially when they have other babies to take care at the same time with Antonio, but Valerie said, c'est la vie, what Antonio wants, Antonio gets! We certainly hope that this lack of routine will help with these final tweeks Antonio needs before going home.

We called at 9:45pm to check on him, and Nurse Pam has him tonight. She was still feeding him but said that he was fine and got 70 ml, but did have a spit up in the end.

It has been a long time since Antonio had Pan taking care of him, but he always did very well with her. We also love Pam, as she got to take care of him for the most difficult time (for us at least) when he went on the HFOV e she was a friendly face and smile during that long period.

Pam also said that Antonio is officially accpeted on the 6 pounds club, weighing today 6 lbs 1.3 Oz!

Hunger Strike / Greve de Fome.

Oh Well, there's no good deed that goes unpunished -- or something like that. Last night, Antonio decided to get all fussy and not to eat again.

I spoke with Dawn around 11pm and she said he ate about 65 ml (with his vitamins), but she had to fight for almost one hour for him to take that. This morning, Gail (she has him again) said that he did not eat at all during the night, so they decided to change things around and will give him 80 ml of his cocktail for the day feedings, so they can skip one feeding and let him sleep at night.

Also, they believe that he has a thrush infection, which is a fairly common as the Candida albicans fungus is everywhere, so no matter how carefully you clean and sterilize pacifiers, bottles, toys, etc., the baby will likely still be exposed to this yeast.

So starting today they will start Nystatin which is applied directly to his mouth for about 7 to 10 days. Because the fungus is transmissable to the breast, Sandra might have also gotten the infection.

--

Nothing like a day after the other -- whomever create this phrase probably had a premature baby...

Antonio woke up a completely different baby today, and Nurse Gail told us that he ate much better in the morning, although he had a few little problems.

In any case, Sandra and I were able to get to the NICU in time to give him "lunch" -- which started with an apetizer of 35 ml of milk mixed with sodium and potassium. He ate it all, and chased that with another 39 ml of milk, all given by daddy.

After that, Antonio was ready for his siesta, so Sandra and I went shopping and when we arrived back to the NICU at 5:00 pm, Sandra got to feed him. Again, she started by eating all his apetizer of 35 ml of milk + sodium and potassium and with dash of cafeine ... but the main dish was directly from the breat and he nursed for about 25 minutes.

After all that, Antonio fell asleep watching "his TV" and holding my hands... see below.

Saturday's Update de Sábado

Hello Y'all, we are leaving to the hospital to spend Saturday with Antonio, but I wanted to let you know of the latest developments. As mentioned the doctors took his feeding tube out yesterday, and therefore he is getting his food orally.

The problem with this is that he is also getting his meds and vitamins orally, normally mixed with the food ... Imagine if you have some multi-vitamins or Advil sprinkled on top of a baked potato, sushi or steak, would you like it?

Neither does Antonio, and since this change he is having a hard time eating. Based on the faces he makes, spit ups, and cries, one can only guess that his sweet, tasty cocktail tastes now horrible!

Last night I tried to give him the bottle and he fought it for almost 45 minutes, and it was like we were torturing him -- Hey, maybe I should patent this as a new enhanced method of interrogation and sell it to the pentagon! -- and he ended up only eating beteen 45-50 ml!

Nurse Kate (again, another wonderful nurse in the staff), told us that at 1am he only got about 35 ml, and at 5am, he got about 50 ml.

Therefore, all through the night he ate well below the range the doctors wanted him to eat, so there is the chance that they will put the feeding tube back in -- we hope just to give him the meds and vitamins.

--

P.s: Dr. Mike called to say there is some RSV in the pediatrics department, so he decided to give Antonio another dose of Synergist (that US$1,000-vaccine, which makes me celebrate that the dollar is so weak lately!)

Also, he comfirmed that the feeding tudbe is gone and that it should stay out for a few days, even if Antonio cannot eat all his bottles (epecially during the night).

Dr. Mike, you're not the sweetst, but we love you anyway!

One more graduation... Mais umä mudança!

I just spoke with Bridget and she said that Antonio continues to do well with the bottle feeding, so Dr. Mike decided to take his endo-tube out, because he is sounding very congested and the tube might be aggravating that and making more difficult for him to breathe.

They uped his feeding again, and now if he eats between 64 and 74 ml in each "seating," that the tube will be gone for good -- Bridget said that it is a chance that he is not finishing his bottles becuase he has a harder time breathing, so if the tube is out he might be able to eat it all...

So, keep your fingers and toes crossed!!!!

-

Mais Boas Notícias & More Great News

No 1o., a sandra acalma o pequeno boquirroto cantando, e no 2o.

-

Antonio had a great night and got to eat all his bottles w/o any major issue, and only got ONE gavage complement -- at 5am, because he did not wake up completely for the feeding and fell asleep with the nipple in his mouth.

The rest of the post is just to present the two videos we made yesterday. In the first, Sandra soothes him singing "Twinkle, Twinkle" and in the second he shows almost all the range of emotions necessary for an actor to get an Oscar -- Hello Mr. Cruise, here we come!

Just another quick update & apenas um update rapidinho

Antonio continues doing well with the new diet, but he had a few accidents, and some large stools. How large? Well, they were large enough for the nurses to decide to use a larger size diaper to keep all in...

He did spit up most of his 9 am feeding, but took all 60 ml of his 1 pm without any major issues.

Other than that, please sit down to hear this: he is weighing 5 Lbs 12.4 Oz!!!

-

100 Dias or Days

-

Yesterday we celebrated Antonio's 100th-day anniversary, or on the flip-side, his 100th day in the NICU. Susan (the nurse practitioner), Bridget, Sandra and I stayed talking by his bed side, reminiscing of his first days and how small and fragile he was not so long ago, and how much he changed in the last few days.

For me, it is almost unbelievable and I still get somewhat emotional when I think of the first time I saw him… but now, like some of the nurses say, he is a big boy and just need to learn how to eat and breathe properly!

Today, Sandra could not go to the hospital as she is feeling a little her throat – it is better safe than sorry. So it was my luck that I could spend a lot of time with him, and to start I was the one that had to change his diaper! When I arrived to his pod, I saw is his face that he was rip, and as soon as I touched him I smelled the bouquet of the damage he was making – I will not get into details, but it weight 39 grams!

After changing his diaper, I got to feed him for the second time. It was funny, because as soon as he saw the bottle on Cathy’s hands, his eyes did not stop following it around and he started to smack his lips, asking for his food.

Antonio wolfed down half of the bottle in “one sitting,” and although he was going fast, he did take some breaks and did not have any problems. I took the bottle and tried burp him, but he did not stop looking at the bottle and – amazingly! – he extended his arms towards the bottle like he was trying to get it from the counter.

After this break, he drank another 20 ml before falling to sleep with the nipple in his mouth.. the pictures in the post are from after I put him in bed after the feeding.

24!

As mentioned, Antonio started to try a bottle-feeding-only diet yesterday. So far, he is doing well, with only a few brady episodes, and only needing a few top-offs via gavage.

He did very well on the breast again yesterday evening, latching on and nursing for about 35 minutes. After that, he fell asleep and slept well for a couple of hours before waking up for his 8pm cares.

Since last night they changed the cares times to accommodate a wider feeding schedule: Antonio now is getting 60 cc of his concoction (milk, milk fortifier and rice cereal) every four hours -- That's 2 ounces!!

He was able to get half of his first feeding of the night from the bottle at 8 pm. Then, at 12am, he was able to drink 45 ml and at 5 am he got the entire 60 ml, without any problems!

So, Dr. Mike's plan is to see if Antonio can get all his feedings from the bottle for the next 24 hours, and if he does well, they will take his endo-feeding tube tomorrow! That is a major step on Antonio's journey home (100 days!)

By the way, Kate weighed him last night and he was 5 lbs 8.4 oz - I wonder how much of that is the rice cereal and how big his next stool will be... my apologies to Nurse Cathy in advance, as she is taking care of him today!

--

Just to let you know that Antonio did not start very well on his new diet: At his 11am feeding, he had a major brady episode (HR at 60s and PO2 at 40%), which forced Bridget to give him aditional Oxygen.

In any case, after he came out of it, he ate all his bottle... more, at his 2pm feeding, he took the entire bottle (45 mL) in 5 minutes -- without any problems!

We are going to visit him later, and hopefully he will be OK and latch on without any problems again!

Bolas & Nuts!!!!

I guess that Dr. Bennett probably read my mind, because last Friday she saw me in the waiting area of the NICU and came outside to speak with me about Antonio's hernias... by the way, Dr. Bennett is the sweetest Doctor I ever met (no offense, Dr. Mike!)

Anyway, we got to spend some time talking about that, and he reassured me that, although Antonio's are big, she saw bigger hernias before. She mentioned that the nurses will stop reducing the hernias during his cares, but will continue to check them -- so my understanding is that she is not as worried about them as we are.

The original plan is to have the surgery done after Antonio is discharged from the NICU, perhaps going to another hospital for that before coming home… Dr. Bennett contacted the surgeon that will eventually take care of that, and hopefully he will stop by at the NICU soon to take a look and make his recommendations.

Now let's talk about the latest developments: Antonio got to have his first full feeding from the breast -- again, no pictures, PERVERTS! He had a hard time at the beginning, he would latch on for a little bit, but then he would actually fight, push and arch his back from Sandra, which of course was upsetting her.

Nurse Aileen suggested that Sandra used a silicone nipple shield, which she tried before without success… but she was able to find a smaller size, and it was like magic: Antonio latched on immediately and nursed for about 35 minutes! He only desat’ed one time for a second, and had no problems whatsoever.

That all happened around 6pm on Monday and we were a little worried, because we cannot see or measure how much Antonio actually got from the breast. However, he went right to sleep after the feeding and did not wake up until right before his 8 pm cares, when he got to eat again (gavage feeding), so we think he got enough directly from the source!

We heard today that Antonio slept all through the night – he got a bath early in the evening, a bottle feeding at 11pm, so I guess all these activities tired him up, because he had to be awakened to get a bottle again at 5 am, but he was quite sleepy and fussy. He must have gotten that from his mom, because every morning he fights with the alarms – currently we have four going on to make sure she will get up to pump and go to work on time! Of course, I stay in bed…

In closing, Dr. Mike is back and he made some new changes to Antonio’s routine: Stating today he will be bottle fed only (before it was three times a day), as well as be getting some rice-cereal with his milk, to thicken the formula and help with the reflux.
-

A Dra.

Antonio Brinca com o Móbile / Antonio plays with his mobile

I am not sure if that was his intention, but I am saying it was -- the video below shows little Antonio "trying" to grab the flying animals...

More fat news / Notícias Gordas

Just to let you guys know that out little pork-chop is weighing 5 lbs 5.2 Oz today!!!

We will need to start to collect contributions for his gym merbership soon... We've got to spend quite some time with Antonio last night and this morning, so Antonio is extra happy, not only because he spent some quality time with mommy and daddy, but also becasue his favorite soccer team -- Fluminense -- qualified to the finals of the Carioca Championship in Brazil.

--

Antonio toma um banho & gets a bath too

:0))

It was a great idea to forget the camera at the NICU the other day, because that allows Antonio's favorite nurse to snap these shots of him taking a bath.

Thank you so much Bridget, not only for remembering of the camera and the thoughtfulness of taking the time to take the pictures, but also for taking some great pictures of our little guy!

He always starts his bath by letting everybody in the NICU know that he's not happy about the bubbles (picture 1), but then he realizes that in a few years there will be no woman washing him, so he relaxes and enjoys (picture 2).

:0))

Of course that we would not let the date pass without giving him a gift. So, following Nurse Gail's (she always have a greatest ideas!), we purchased a Ocean Wonders Aquarium to be placed on his crib.

The idea is for Antonio to have something that moves to focus his eyes on and start to strengthen the eye muscles and his eye-tracking skills, soothe and help him relax (it plays soft music and rhythmic lights), as well as giving him something to do while he waits to come home -- he must be bored laying there all day, specially now that he spends more and more time awake.

We call it his TV, and we put it up on his crib last night before we left, so we did not have a chance to see how he would react to it. I just called the NICU to see how Antonio is doing today, and Bridget (still his favorite nurse!) said that he adores his TV and that he is always looking at it, mesmerized!

She also told me that he got all his first feeding in the morning orally, and he did great without any brady episodes -- actually the last episode he had was at midnight, and it was a little one!

Feliz Aniversário Meu Filho & Happy Birthday My Son

Eu te prometo que não se passará um dia pelo resto da minha vida em que eu não te direi o quanto eu te amo e o quão importante e especial você é para mim e para esse mundão de Deus;

Eu te prometo que tentarei fazer o impossível para te ajudar a superar tudo isso que está passando e o pelo que ainda está por vir;

Eu te prometo que farei o meu melhor para que você cresça uma criança feliz;

Eu te prometo ter com você toda a paciência que eu nunca tive com ninguém, nem comigo mesmo;

Eu te prometo achar tempo todos os dias para brincar, te contar uma história, conversar, ou apenas estar com você;

Eu te prometo que vou fazer tudo que eu possa para tornar esse mundo um pouco melhor para você;

Eu te prometo que te ensinarei a andar de bicicleta, jogar futebol, a taboada (sem tijolo!), soltar pipa, escrever seu nome, dirigir, e tantas outras coisas que são importantes e que você no momento certo vai precisar e querer aprender;

Sometimes I have to stop and think to believe that it has been already three months since you came to this world ... so many days passed, so many things have already happened, but it still seems that was yesterday when I saw you as that teeny and fragile little person laying in the incubator, fighting for your life.

After seeing everything that you went through in the last three months, the only thing I wanted was for you to be able to understand how much I love you. Not even if I was a writer or a scholar, I would be able to describe my feelings and the emotions that I felt (and feel) each day that I saw how much you’ve grown and you surpassing all the expectations they had for you so far.

On your three-month anniversary, these are my gifts and my promises to you, my son:

I promise that there will be not a single day for the rest of my life that I will not say to you how much I love you and how important and special you are for me and for this world;

I promise that I will try to do everything possible to help you go through these and all the problems and bad times that are still to come;

I promise that I will make my best so that you grow to be a happy child;

I promise to have all the patience with you that I never had with anybody else, not even with myself;

I promise to find the time every day to play, to tell you a history, to talk or to simply hang out with you;

I promise that I will try to do everything possible to make this a better world for you;

I promise that I will teach to you to ride a bicycle, play soccer, add and subtract (without the help od a brick!), fly a kite, write your name, and all the other stuff that are important and that you will want to learn when the the time is right for you;

I promise to you that I will always be your father, and your best friend for as long as you want...

My son, thank you for making my life whole with just a smile.

Grandma Arlene Holds the Baby for the 1st Time / Vovó Arlene Segura o Bebê pela 1a. Vez

After three months of waiting, Arlene was able to hold our little Antonio for the first time on Saturday night. I was not there to see it (the NICU only allows two people at a time on his bed side), but based on the pictures both the baby and the grandma survived without a scratch... :o))

After Arlene left, I was able to come in and Antonio was nuzzling and getting all confy with Sandra, and we got to hang out for a while ... until he decided to act up a little, and had one of his bradycardia episodes -- but the nurses guided us to make him snap out of it. Sandra took these pictures of me holding Antonio after the episode.

First, we would like to thank Carrie (the beautiful one, not the horse-faced one from Sexy in the City) and Arlene (Sandra's mom -- she's pretty too) for all the work they did to put together Sandra's baby shower this past weekend. All was great, the food was wonderful!

Second, we want to thank each and eveyone of you for all the nice & cutest gifts you gave us to help prepare for Antonio's second arrival -- his arrival home!

Last, but not least, thank you Shannon and Aaron for your generosity -- the two wonderful bag of goodies will make Antonio the most fasionista baby boy in the Baltimore area.

From Head to Toes...

Good night to all! This was a crazy weekend and we were running around all day, so I had no time to update the blog -- although we have many things tell!

So, let me stop the chit-chat and to tell all about last Friday’s meeting with the staff at the hospital. As we explain in 22/2/08 the staff schedules these meetings to report in a more formal setting the current status and prognosis for Antonio – I say more formally because they do a great job of keeping us 100% informed about everyday progress and regress that our little guy has… Therefore this post will be long and somewhat technical:

  • Starting from his head, the results of the last ultrasound were very good, so no issues from there… However, considering Antonio’s respiratory issues, there are no other tests or exams that are recommended at this stage, to check and diagnosis any sequela in his brain.

Unfortunately, considering how early he was born, all the complications that he went through, and even all the treatments that he had so far, the doctors cannot rule out any neurological sequela. However, Dr. Mike reassure us that Antonio is acting as a normal baby, doing everything that they would expect of three-month old preemie baby, and nothing that they would not like to see him doing at this stage.

Therefore, later when he comes home, Antonio will have to be followed up by a neurologist, who will most likely require a MRI and continue to follow his development closely for a few years.

  • Now speaking of his eyes, Antonio will have another eye exam this week, and we hope that the guy up-there will look after and help Antonio out, so the eye doctor will confirm that the ROP has regressed.

However, empirically speaking and based in my layperson’s observation, it is 100% certain that Antonio can see – he is always looking around and is very alert to everything that happens around his crib -- either entertained with the little animals on his mobile, or looking at the nurses getting his food ready, or even at the janitor cleaning the floors! Moreover, there are times that Antonio spends almost one hour looking at the other baby in the mirror!

  • Now about Antonio’s little mouth: a newborn’s palate is very soft and malleable, so a "ridge" was formed on Antonio’s, in the shape of the ET tube… that is something normal and nothing that can lead to any speech or diction problems in the future, and the ridge tends to “disappear” as his little mouth grows.

Speaking of “speaking", Antonio continues to sound very hoarse since he came off of the ventilator. This is also normal, but the doctors expected that he would be much better by now. Therefore, Dr. Mike suspects that perhaps one of his vocal cords has been paralyzed because of the tube.

Again, this is nothing that will hinder Antonio’s speech, but if it does not improve and the vocal cord is paralyzed forever, Antonio will have a hoarse voice – hopefully alla Rod Stewart!

Both Sandra and I believe that his voice seems less-and-less hoarse each day, and that his cries are getting louder-and-louder too – Can you believe that we are celebrating this? – so, based on our empirical observations, Dr. Mike said there’s definitely the possibility that the problem is just temporary (i.e. the vocal cord might be still a little inflamed), In any case, he plans to have his vocal cords checked via an endoscope before Antonio goes home.

  • Since his first day on the NICU, the lungs have been the biggest issue for Antonio... and they still are ... and they will continue to be for a long, long time. His little lungs are quite scarred, which makes it not only more difficult to breathe, but he is also extremely susceptible to the respiratory problems, especially since his immunologic system is not completely developed.

This means that, when Antonio comes home and for at least 2-3 years, we will have that to take some extreme measures to prevent him from getting any type of respiratory illness – a little cold could be deadly for him. These extreme measures will include restricting visits at home and contact with other babies and children for a long time.

In addition, Antonio will also have that to be followed closely by a pulmonologist, to make sure his lungs are developing appropriately. Moreover, Dr. Mike said that we will have to watch Antonio very closely, and to call and go see his pediatric doctor at any minimal sign of a cold, a cough, or a runny nose...

Antonio continues being treated with Pulmicort and Albuterol, in addition to receiving his doses of diuretics (Diuril and Aldactone) to help with the elimination of liquids.

  • Still about Antonio’s breathing and also about his heart: he continues to have episodes of bradycardia and apnea, especially during or right after his feedings (even more when bottle-fed).

The doctors believe that this is not only because of reflux, but also because normally the blood flows to the stomach during the digestion, and also because his brain still is not completely matured nor mastered the “breathing reflex”.

To help him out, since Saturday Dr. Mike started giving Antonio his daily dose of caffeine, which stimulates the breathing and his cardiac rate as well. We already saw some improvement, but he still had some small episodes during the weekend.

This is another hurdle that Antonio will have that to surpass before coming home, especially since he will not be discharged if he is still having these episodes.

In any case, most likely Antonio will come home still on an oxygen cannula and with an apnea monitor as well, and he will definitely need both for a long while.

  • Now, let’s speak of his reflux: as I mentioned before, Antonio now is getting Prilosec one time a day (remember the commercial, this once a day tablet – the purple pill I believe!), and we already saw some improvement as he is not spitting up so much or so often as before.

In addition, since he graduated to a crib Antonio has been placed on a “wedge” that keeps him inclined to help with the reflux. This wedge will come home with him and will become part of the décor on of his room!

The doctors mentioned that perhaps the reflux might be caused because Antonio is still to be being fed by a tube, which keeps a sphincter between his esophagus and stomach half-open, allowing some food to back up towards his mouth.

Therefore, they wish they could start bottle feeding him only as soon as possible, because they cause a circular-reference between reflux and the bradycardia...

Well, that is all for now.. later I will come back with more interesting news (his weight, pictures of the party, etc...)

Obrigado Gina

Another busted bubble... Mais uma bolha estourada

Hello, we're are having a baby shower today for Sandra, so this will be a short post as I am running around like a chicken without head.

Just to let you know that our meeting yesterday went well, and Antonio is doing just fine, but Dr. Mike told us that Antonio will most likely need to stay 6 to 8 weeks more in the NICU before he comes home.

Needless to say that we are disappointed, but I rather bring him home for good, and not have to take him back to the hospital because he was not ready to go home!

Tomorrow I will post more details of Antonio's current health status, including the prognosis for when he comes home.
-

-

Slow day at the office, allows for a little joke... Everything is all right with our little Dr. Evil -- just a few little changes: He is now getting prilosec instead of zantac for his reflux.

Also, he got his second bottle feding last night, and he drank the entire bottle (40 mL) in about 20 minutes again... Right after he was finished, he had another bradycardia episode, so the doctors think it is due to the volume and how wuick he is eating from the bottle. So, they decided to put a break and only give him half of the total volume of the feeding.

However, so Antonio can learn the mechanics of oral feeding, he can get 20 mL from the bottle on each of his feedings!

One more quick update & Mais um update rápido

Just a quik one to say that Antonio is weighing 4 Lb 12.4 Oz today... hopefully he will get to 5 Lbs over the weekend!

A few of you asked me if I will continue writing after Antonio comes home. Although the main objective was to keep you updated of his development in the NICU, it was our intention to keep writing it as there will be many more stories to tell after we have him at home!

So as long you keep coming, we will be here...

-

The good news is piling up

--
As we said yesterday, the doctors decided to let Antonio sleep during the night, and not wake him up for his cares as the nurses used to do. The result: Antonio proves that he is like daddy and sleeps from 2 am to 8 am without any problems.

During that time Antonio only got his feeding at 5 am, and when they woke him up at 8 am, Nurse Cathy tried to give him the bottle, and Antonio got 38 mL in 20 minutes -- remember that he normally gets 40 mL in 45 minutes via the feeding tube!

So, with this development, Dr. Mike decided to change his diet a little and give him the bottle twice daily, and told that Sandra can really breastfeed him now -- before he was supposed to just nuzzle, and in case he latched on, not let him nurse for long.

Tomorrow, Sandra and I will meet with the staff again, and hopefully discuss the steps leading to Antonio coming home on -- or BEFORE -- his due date, April 23th...

Another bundle of joy... Mais um bebê feliz

Our good friends & neighbors Abby and Ryan just got a brand new baby, a little sister for Maya! We went to see them at the hospital yesterday, and mommy and baby are doing fine, and Maya is happy to be a big sister!

The little girl is a cutie pie!

More good news, e algumas notícias boas também

Let me start by saying that, starting today, Antonio is on a "counting calories" diet... he gained about 4.2 Oz since Sunday, so the doctors decided to reduce the number of calories they were adding to his milk, so he will be getting just 22 cal per oz of milk. By the way, his weight today was 4 lbs 10.2 oz.

Another set of good news is that, also starting tonight, they will stretch out his care times during the night to 6 hours, so he will get to sleep more through the night. Again, I believe that they are trying to get Antonio ready to come home, and need to start to train him to sleep during the night... if not there's the risk we will want a refund! :o))

Some stats: He is getting 40 mL of milk on each feeding (still 45 min. in and 3.25 hours rest); the O2 flow they are giving to him was reduced to 1 L yesterday, he got 10 mL of milk from the bottle in the morning

What a Sunday... Que Domingão legal

There were so many good changes in Antonio's routine yesterday, that we will start with the not so great news: he either lost weight or, as we thought, there was a mistake when we weighed him on Saturday -- He was weighing 4 Lb 5.9 Oz yesterday. Other than that, all is great news...

Dr. Mike came in on Sunday and decided to start him on nasal cannula only. He did pretty well, and only had some minor bradycardia and bronchospasm episodes during the first day and night.

We got to spend most of the day with him on Sunday and it was clear that he was much happier with this new arrangement, so lets hope that he will stay that way. Another great development was that they tried to bottle feed him again... but this time he did really well.

We gave him 5 mL of milk, and he drank it almost in one gulp, smacking his little lips after was done, and looked around like asking for more. So, Dr. Mike suggested that we tried to give him another 5 mL and see how we would do.

Again, Antonio did a great job and got the extra food without any problem! And we got all that on video... See below.

Inacreditável is Unbelievable!

Today was a very especial day for us... Antonio outgrew his first clothes! Of course it was just some preemie onesies we got for him back when, but it is good to be able to actually see how much he is growing these days!

What was unbelievable was how much weight he gained since yesterday -- exactly 2.96 Oz! Now he is weighing 4 Lbs 6.4 Oz! You can see above what his weight registered on the scale (in grams). In any case, right before we came home, Antonio "had to go" a total of 18 grams, requiring TWO diapers to contain the damage he made...

Actually, I thought we made a mistake or perhaps the scale was not zeroed, because based on his progression so far, I only anticipated that he would reach the 2 kilos mark on Wednesday or Thursday.

Other than his weight, another piece of great news is that the doctors will try to take him off of the CPAP for good starting on Monday... that will be great, because he does very well on the nasal cannula and he hates that "elephant’s trunk" stuck to his nose!

And to finish, Antonio is also doing better regarding breast feeding... Nurse Eileen tried a different trick today (something that I had suggested Sandra a few times, by the way) that really worked -- she put some droplets of milk on his pacifier before giving it to him, so he can associate the taste with the "sucking motion". Then, when it was time to give him the breast, we also put some droplets of milk on Sandra's breast, which made Antonio go crazy and latch on almost immediately after he tasted the milk.

Just to let you know that Antonio is doing great.

Today we got to give him another bath, which he loves... he now is being fed 33 mL of milk per feeding and he now weighs 4 lbs 3.5 Oz!

Mais Boas Notícias & More Great News

Dá-lhe Garoto!!!

Great & Fresh News!

Sandra just called me to let US know that today Antonio is starting a new adventure... he will start to alternate the nasal cannula and the CPAP, SIX hours on the cannula and three hours on the CPAP! Better yet, the first six hours with the cannula passed without any problems!

And more...apparently Antonio got mad about last week's eye exam results and decided to study for another eye exam he took today, as he did much better! There is still some progression and the doctor could see blood vessels on Zone II-III, but it was back to stage 1.

The eye doctor said that, when we see the eyes getting better like that, there is a good chance that the ROP will totally regress... he will check Antonio back in two weeks.

To finish, Antonio is weighing 4 Lb 2.4 Oz today!
