Aviso aos navegantes: esse será um post muito longo!

Como vocês podem ver pelo meu sorriso na última foto da série acima, nós tivemos grandes notícias ontem, sendo que a melhor delas é que a partir de ontem, uma vez que o Antonio está estável e se "comportando" muito bem, os médicos e enfermeira querem que a Sandra e eu passemos a ser mais ativos no cuidado diário do Antonio.

Isso quer dizer que, não só trocar fraldas esporadicamente e tomar a temperatura dele, eles querem, sempre que estivermos na NICU, que nós abrirmos a incubadeira para acariciar e falar com o Antonio...

Não precisa nem dizer que com essa mudança nós estamos mais felizes que pinto no lixo!!! Mas, além dessa novidade, ontem pesaram ele e ele ganhou mais peso -- estando agora com 1 Kg e 82 g! Ele está ganhando, na média 20-30 gramas por dia o que, segundo os médicos, está de muito bom tamanho...

Ontem nós também começamos um novo experimento: Como falei num post de alguns dias atrás, Antonio parece responder muito bem às nossas vozes. Então compramos um gravador digital, e gravamos algumas estórias e músicas (a mamãe em inglês e e o papai em portugês) pra que sejam "tocadas" para ele durante o dia... três pontos muito interessantes desse experimento:

1) Durante um certo ponto da nossa visitaA enfermeira estava tendo um trabalhão pra manter a saturação de O2 acima dos nivel estabelecido pra ele (entre 85 e 95)... ela tentava mudar o tudo do ventilador de posição, fazer sucção do tudo e da boquinha do Antonio, aumentar o volume de O2 sendo bombeado, ... e nada, a saturação caia prar 75-80 a cada tentativa. Eu resolvi então colocar o gravador na incubadeira, e foi batata -- assim que começou a tocar a primeira estória, a saturaçao dele foi à 98 e não caiu mais ... Depois disso ele se estabilizou, mas as enfermeira continuaram a tocar as estórias durante a noite e o dia de hoje.

2) A primeira vez que tocamos as estórias, ele mantinha o nivel saturação, mas derrepente o nivel caia drasticamente para logo depois subir drasticamente mais uma vez... intrigado, eu abri a porta da incubadeira e notei que cada caida acontecia exatamente logo após o término de uma estória contada por mim e o início de outra contada pela Sandra (ou vice-e-versa), como se ele resentisse a mudança da voz (tipo "aonde foi minha mãe/meu pai?"), mas tão logo ele notasse que a voz seguinte era da mamãe, ele sosegava e a saturação voltava a subir.

3) Essa observação foi feita pela enfermeira de hoje (Melissa): O Antonio parece gostar mais da minha voz do que da Sandra. Ele fica mias relaxado e o nível de saturação de O2 melhor durante as minhas estáorias... não sei se é verdade, mas isso talvez seja por que eu procurava contar estórias pra ele quando ele aida estava na barriga da mãe.

E pra terminar o post: hoje pela manhã, os médicos resolveram colocá-lo novamente no ventilador convencional. Nas palavras (traduzidas) do Dr. Mike, "o Antonio está atolado no VOAF, então nós precisamos dar uma mãozinha pra ele sair dessa." Até agora (são 11 da manhã), essa mudança parece ter sido acertada: a saturação de O2 está na media de 92, com o ventilador bombeando à 32% apenas.

E, de acordo com a Melissa, o Antonio está super relaxado, ouvindo suas estórias e chupando a sua chupeta!

Let me start by saying that this will be a very longpost!

As you can see by my smile on the last photo of the series above, we had some great news yesterday, the best part is that, starting yesterday, since Antonio has been quite stable and progessing, the doctors and nurses want Sandra and me to start to be more active in Antonio's daily cares. This means, not only changing his diaper every once in a while or taking his temperature, they actually want us to open the incubator to caress and speak to Antonio...

I don't need to tell you that this change made us happier than a young chicken in the garbage can! (don't ask, this is a brazilian saying)

In addition, they weighed Antonio again yesterday and confirmed that he gained more weight -- he now weighs 2 Lbs 6 Oz! He is gaining in average about 1 Oz/day, which, according to the doctors, it is pretty good!

We also started a new experiment yesterday: As I mentioned in a post from a few days, Antonio seemed to respond very well to our voices. So we went out and bought a digital recorder to record some stories and lullabyes (mommy in English and daddy in Portuguese) so the nurses can play them to him during the day. We noticed three very interesting things since we started using the recorder:

1) At a certain point during our visit, the nurse was having a hard time keeping the O2 saturation above of the average 85-95 set for him ... she tried to change the ventilator's tube's position, to suction his tube and mouth, to increase the volume of pumped O2 being pumped ... and nothing, the saturation kept falling to 75-80 after each attempt. I decided then to place the recorder in the incubator, and like that, as soon as it played the first story, Antonio's breathing got better and he reached 98 of O2 sats and it did not fall anymore ... After this he stabilized and nurses continued to play the recordings throughout the day and night!

2) During the first time we played the recording, we noticed that the sats kept going drastically down and up again and after a while that happened again... I was curious, so I opened the incubator's door and noticed that each timethe desat happened it was immediately after the ending of story told by me and the beginning of another told by Sandra (and vice versa-whenever the story switched from one of us to the other), as if he resented the voice changes-- like "where was mommy/daddy?") -- but as soon as he noticed that the following voice was Sandra's (or mine), he quieted down and his sats went up again...

3) This comment was made by the Melissa, today's nurse: Antonio seems to like more my voice than Sandra's ... he seem's more relaxed and his sats level get better during my stories. I don't know if it is true, but perhaps but this is because I used to tell stories to him when he was still in mommy's belly!

Well, to finish this long post, we called this morning and the doctors had decided to put him back on the conventional ventilator once again. In Dr. Mike's own words "he is stuck on the oscillator, so we need to give him a hand to see what he does next." So far, it's 11:00 am, he is doing pretty well and the change seems to have worked: his O2 sats at at 92, with the ventilator at only 32%.

And, according to Melissa, Antonio is super relaxed, hearing its stories and sucking his pacifier!
