Três Quilos & Three Kilos

Antonio's Favorite team is playing in Medellin and I am speaking of some kilos, but there are no relations... Antonio passed the 3,000 grams mark today, and is weighing 3,002 grams (6 lbs 9.8 Oz)!

I know I am biased to say, but he is getting to be a gorgeous baby boy, and if his eyes keep the same color, he will be dangerous for the neighborhood's girls. His eye color is violet blue, like Elizabeth Taylor's...

Sandra and I are radiant with Antonio's eminent arrival home. We already made the arrangements to spend this weekend at the hospital, separated so both have the experience to taking care of him on our own: Sandra will spend Saturday night and I will spend Sunday night.

In any case, we want him to come home for good and not to go back to the hospital because of any problem. Right now, what worries us the most are his hernias, which not only seem to be painful to him, but also make it much more difficult for him to evacuate and pass gas (I am very polite today!). The doctors are trying to schedule with the surgeon, but in the end it is up to him and the anesthesiologist to schedule the surgery, which might not happen in the next few weeks.

Well, it has been 114 days of waiting, and he who waits that long can certainly be patient to wait a little longer, because our lives would be much easier if the surgery was done before his discharge.

More great news / Mais Boas Notícias

Complementing the good news we posted yesterday, it seems that our little guy passed that bump on the road and decided to eat better.

Following the sugestion of his Occupational Therapist, Lisa, yesterday we brought in a different nipple for his bottles, and it seems that he likes them better. It is unfortunate that, because of the thrush, the nurses need to discard them after each feeding, which might just help make a whole in my pocket... but it does not matter as long as Antonio keep eating well.

In addition to the new nipple, the doctors decided to up his calories intake to 24/oz again, which helps to reduce the volume of milk he needs to get with each feeding. Even considering Antonio's weight gain in the last few days, he still only needs to get 75 ml each time. The best is that they also stopped with the gavage during the nights.

However, yesterday he did not want the breast once again. He had to take 20ml with his meds first, which he did without much trouble (see video above). Then, when he could get the "good stuff" he onlt stayed on the breast for about 10 minutes and did not suck much at all. So we decided to give him the bottle and he took 27 ml before he started to fight with it.

In any case, he gained some more weight and is now 6 lb 7 Oz!

That D Word & Aquela Palavra Mágica que Começa com A

We just got a voice mail from St. Joseph's Social Worker, Linda Scott. She used the D word... I am so happy I think I am going to cry!

Although we suspected that it was coming soon, based on Antonio's progress the last few weeks and mostly on the behavior of some of the Nurse Practitioners, it was great to hear from her that they are gearing up for DISCHARGE!!!

The doctors do not have a date set yet, but they are ordering the "supplies" (home apnea monitor, oxygen bottle) and want us to spend some nights at the hospital. The idea is to make us as confortable as possible for taking care of our little Antonio, including getting his food and meds ready without any help from the nurses.

The funniest thing is that Sandra and I were planning to make that request tomorrow, to perhaps spend the night this coming weekend... So maybe it will happen sooner!

-

Mais um dia no paraiso & Another day in paradise

Like I already said, nothing like a day after the other, afer a week!

Since last night Antonio started to cooperate with is nurses and ate all of his meals. However, today, for our visit, he did not want to breastfeed but he ended up eating 75 ml from the bottle.

In addition, since this morning he is getting low flow oxigen at 0.1 liters, and vene with this change he is doing fine during his feedings.

The best of all is that they measure his lenght yesterday and he is a little shy of 17 inches. More, he gained weight again and is at 6 lb 5.2 oz!

Now, the better part is to be able to see him being more social, and reacting to our presence and smile and giggle when we paly with him.

Sunday, bloody Saunday...

-

Today it was a very difficult day, especially when comparing with the nice moments we passed with Antonio in the last few days. Basically, Antonio was a brat today.

For starters, Saturday night he gave Nurse Dawn a run for her money – not only taking an hour to get 65 ml for his 9pm feeding, but also spending the same time at 1am to take 55 ml, but “returned” 35 ml to her. After this he slept the rest of the night and took 65 ml at 5am. After that, Bridget arrived for the day shift, and Antonio decided to cooperate with her, taking his recomended volume of 67ml at 9am and went to sleep.

Sandra and I arrived for our visit at noon, and Antonio was half sleeping, so we let him rest for a little while and at 12:30 pm we stared to get him ready by taking his temperature, change his diaper, etc, but that was not enough and he continued to sleep. Then Sandra got him ready for breasfeeding, and again we got nothing from him...

Since he did not wake up for that either, Sandra went out to pump at 1:15 pm, and I stayed behind, responsible for waking him up at 2pm to eat, in case he did not on his own. So, at 1:35 pm, I started to “mess with him” and was able to give him the first bottle with 20 ml + 0.4 ml of Iron without any major issues, despite of the fact that he was still half sleeping.

After that, it was on and the battle to give him the rest of his feeding started: He pushed his bottle with his little hands, pushed the nipple out with his tongue, closed his mouth shut, but I still was able to give him the second bottle with 10 ml + potassium in about 20 minutes. (NA: I have that to confess that, after to tasting this mixture, I understand why he was being difficult: Man that thing is nasty!!!) But after that he only took 25 ml of milk and rice cereal in almost 40 minutes...

If you did not take the time to add everything up, here it goes: He only ate 55 ml (which is 12 what ml less of what is prescribed for him) in 1 hour and 25 minutes!

Ah, but he was not happy with all the acting up yet… when we came back for the 5pm cares, once again he was half sleeping through his cares, and went to mom’s breast, sucked for 15 minutes and he went back to sleep. Then beaten, we put Antonio back in his crib and got ready to leave … as soon as we moved in direction of the door, he started to cry.

We tried everything to soothe him: we tried the pacifier, the mobile, his TV, we sang to him, but with each attempt he stopped crying for about 10 seconds and as soon as we thought he was fine, he started all over again. Bridget suggested that we put him on the bouncer, and he calmed down a little, but still screamed a little. So I suggested that we gave him more milk, and Bridget got a bottle with 30 ml ready, which he sucked dry and without any problem in less than 5 minutes!

Since it was way past 6:30 pm and we were not allowed to stay at the NICU pass that time, we left and when we called later at night they told us that Bridget gave him another 20 ml before leaving...

The result of his acting up is that, in addition to frustrating his nurses, daddy and mommy, he did not gain any weight since last Tuesday. So the doctors were forced prescribe that the feeding tube to be placed every night, so the nurses can give him the entire amount that he did not take on his own during the day… Last night, despite the of he eating decently, he had to get 20 ml extra via gavage.

I believe that all this is the reaction to a combination of factors – First, his hernias and the addition of rice cereal to his feeding, which makes it more difficult for him to evacuate and therefore, he is full all the time; and second, he might be in the middle of a growth spurt, and that makes him tired and sleepy.

To finish, some more good news / Pra terminar algumas boas notícias

Antonio got his eye checked on Friday, and although it was not his last eye exan, the doctor said he is out of the woods. The eyes are not completely mature yet, but he said it is very rare that ROP will develop after this stage. He will come back and check Antonio again in two weeks.

In any case, the eye doctor gave the "go ahead" for him to be put on low flow O2 (1/8 L pressure, he now receives 1 L), which is the type he will come home. That should happene in the next few days.

-

When we arrived at the hospital yesterday, Antonio was enjoying the bouncer waiting for us to get there. He really likes it, and I hope that will make him more confortable to pass the car seat test he will have to before getting discharged from the hospital.

Now it is official, Antonio is a big boy... yesterday he wore a preemie outfit most likely for the last time (see picture above). We already donated all his older P clothes to the NICU, and were very happy to see another baby wearing one of his outfits -- he needs to learn how to share!

-

Since it has been possible for us to hold Antonio, for me the best part of the day is after he finishes nursing and Sandra goes pump the rest of the milk. She needs to leave the NICU, so I get him just for myself for 30-45 minutes, so I can enjoy and drool all over him.

It has nothing better for me than, after a day full of annoyances at wort and the rush hour traffic to the hospital, to be able to hold, kiss and feel him close to me, it makes me forget all troubles. The best is that he is getting more social and interacting with the world, so he acts like he also enhoy his time with daddy.

Here are some pictures we took today during daddy-son time.

Dad Gives a Bath & Papai Da Um Banho

Well, the six-to-eight weeks time frame is passing quite fast and we want to make sure we are ready to take care of our little guy on our own, and for the past few days Sandra and I have wanted to do as much as we can at the hospital to prepare ourselves for that day -- from drawing up his meds to checking his "balls"...

So today I got to give him a bath, with some great help from Sandra who held him up, while being checked closely by Susan to make sure I was doing all right -- Here are the pictures to prove that I am capable!

-

Antonio tem uma Festa and has a Party Too!

It has been 110 days since Antonio arrived! To celebrate the 100th-day achievement, the staff of the NICU gave Antonio a nice party yesterday to celebrate his 109th day... he even got some ice-cream cake and a party hat!

Of course that we had cake leftover from yesterday, and we got to share with last nights and today's staff... So Susan said we should give him some, so I dipped my index finger in the cake and let him lick it off -- he did enjoy it and licked his chops!

Still with the Weight Problems / Ainda com o Problema de Peso

It's been a while, I know ... but I have been quite busy this last couple of days, without much time, and no news to post on Antonio's blog. However, this will be the first of several posts for the next two days, as we have much to tell!

The bad news is that he is still struggling with gaining weight for the past few days -- kind of stuck at 6 lbs 3 OZ -- but he seems to be healthy and getting longer. He is eating better since last night, but not taking all he is supposed to -- at least 67 ml per feeding -- especially during the night.

The result of his "hunger strike" was that Susan, the nurse practitioner today, ordered that they put the feeding tube back in during the night to supplement his feedings -- in case he doesn’t do it on his own.

We believe that the problem is that summer is almost here, and he wants to look good in the little Speedo we brought to him from Rio, so Sandra had to give him a pep talk about his eating

Post do Nascimento & Birth Day Post

Just a quick post to put some new pictures up and give you the latest news.

Our visit yesterday was without any major incidents, with the exception of giving Antonio his medicines -- sodium and potassium, and to clean up the damage he left in his diaper just before we got to the NICU -- as the great phylospher B. Simpson said: Ai Caramba!

Bridget (see picture above) was his nurse again, and even that did not preclude from acting up a when being fed. Despite that and the weight of the damage mentioned above, he continues to gain weight and Antonio is now 6 lbs and 2.4 Oz, which would not be such a low weight for his birth.

Either today or tomorrow he will have his last (hopefully) eye exam to check if his eyes have completely matured. If that is confirmed, he will start to receive "off the wall" oxygen which is the same type and pressur as the one he most likely will require when coming hom. Also, that will allow that Sandra and I spend some nights in the NICU taking care of him, as training!

It was supposed to be today... era pra ser hoje...

April 23, 2008 - Antonio's original due date.

We had made so many plans for the last four months, to get all ready for his arrival, but he wanted come out earlier. Now looking back, knowing what we know, and after most of the worries have passed, I have to say that this journey has been bumpy, sometimes very scary, but still a blessing...

It is a blessing to have the opportunity see Antonio grow and develop, from a fetus to a beautiful and now much healthier boy....

It is a blessing to have met so many wonderful people, that came into our lives through him.

It was a blessing to have experienced Antonio's reaction to my voice while still very little and sick in the incubator... and how he still loves, and smiles when I sing "Nana Nenem" to him.

It is a blessing to come here every morning with the only intention of keeping the family and friends informed, but get in return wonderful words of encouragement from some many people -- most of whom I don't even know personally, but that are now Antonio's uncles and aunties.

It was a blessing for me to have reconnected with my faith, not with a building or a book, but with that deep feeling that there must be more to life than what we can see and comprehend.

It is a blessing to know that if you ask, you shall receive.

Antonio, welcome to this world and thank you for bringing so many blessings -- The biggest one is to have you in our lives!

I love you, son.

-

All is well with Antonio, despite the fact he is making the nurses work very hard to make him eat.

About that, we had a very good conversation with the Nurse Practitioner today. Valerie told us that Dr. Mike's directives got diluted over the weekend, making things a little confusing.

According to Valerie, Dr. Mike wants that Antonio's routine in the NICU to be a close as possible of what it would be at home, so basically he can eat whenever and as much he wants as long as he eats more than 420 ml/day (150 ml/kg weight).

For sure this lack of routine will make the nurse's lives a little more difficult, specially when they have other babies to take care at the same time with Antonio, but Valerie said, c'est la vie, what Antonio wants, Antonio gets! We certainly hope that this lack of routine will help with these final tweeks Antonio needs before going home.

We called at 9:45pm to check on him, and Nurse Pam has him tonight. She was still feeding him but said that he was fine and got 70 ml, but did have a spit up in the end.

It has been a long time since Antonio had Pan taking care of him, but he always did very well with her. We also love Pam, as she got to take care of him for the most difficult time (for us at least) when he went on the HFOV e she was a friendly face and smile during that long period.

Pam also said that Antonio is officially accpeted on the 6 pounds club, weighing today 6 lbs 1.3 Oz!

Hunger Strike / Greve de Fome.

Oh Well, there's no good deed that goes unpunished -- or something like that. Last night, Antonio decided to get all fussy and not to eat again.

I spoke with Dawn around 11pm and she said he ate about 65 ml (with his vitamins), but she had to fight for almost one hour for him to take that. This morning, Gail (she has him again) said that he did not eat at all during the night, so they decided to change things around and will give him 80 ml of his cocktail for the day feedings, so they can skip one feeding and let him sleep at night.

Also, they believe that he has a thrush infection, which is a fairly common as the Candida albicans fungus is everywhere, so no matter how carefully you clean and sterilize pacifiers, bottles, toys, etc., the baby will likely still be exposed to this yeast.

So starting today they will start Nystatin which is applied directly to his mouth for about 7 to 10 days. Because the fungus is transmissable to the breast, Sandra might have also gotten the infection.

--

Nothing like a day after the other -- whomever create this phrase probably had a premature baby...

Antonio woke up a completely different baby today, and Nurse Gail told us that he ate much better in the morning, although he had a few little problems.

In any case, Sandra and I were able to get to the NICU in time to give him "lunch" -- which started with an apetizer of 35 ml of milk mixed with sodium and potassium. He ate it all, and chased that with another 39 ml of milk, all given by daddy.

After that, Antonio was ready for his siesta, so Sandra and I went shopping and when we arrived back to the NICU at 5:00 pm, Sandra got to feed him. Again, she started by eating all his apetizer of 35 ml of milk + sodium and potassium and with dash of cafeine ... but the main dish was directly from the breat and he nursed for about 25 minutes.

After all that, Antonio fell asleep watching "his TV" and holding my hands... see below.

Saturday's Update de Sábado

Hello Y'all, we are leaving to the hospital to spend Saturday with Antonio, but I wanted to let you know of the latest developments. As mentioned the doctors took his feeding tube out yesterday, and therefore he is getting his food orally.

The problem with this is that he is also getting his meds and vitamins orally, normally mixed with the food ... Imagine if you have some multi-vitamins or Advil sprinkled on top of a baked potato, sushi or steak, would you like it?

Neither does Antonio, and since this change he is having a hard time eating. Based on the faces he makes, spit ups, and cries, one can only guess that his sweet, tasty cocktail tastes now horrible!

Last night I tried to give him the bottle and he fought it for almost 45 minutes, and it was like we were torturing him -- Hey, maybe I should patent this as a new enhanced method of interrogation and sell it to the pentagon! -- and he ended up only eating beteen 45-50 ml!

Nurse Kate (again, another wonderful nurse in the staff), told us that at 1am he only got about 35 ml, and at 5am, he got about 50 ml.

Therefore, all through the night he ate well below the range the doctors wanted him to eat, so there is the chance that they will put the feeding tube back in -- we hope just to give him the meds and vitamins.

--

P.s: Dr. Mike called to say there is some RSV in the pediatrics department, so he decided to give Antonio another dose of Synergist (that US$1,000-vaccine, which makes me celebrate that the dollar is so weak lately!)

Also, he comfirmed that the feeding tudbe is gone and that it should stay out for a few days, even if Antonio cannot eat all his bottles (epecially during the night).

Dr. Mike, you're not the sweetst, but we love you anyway!

One more graduation... Mais umä mudança!

I just spoke with Bridget and she said that Antonio continues to do well with the bottle feeding, so Dr. Mike decided to take his endo-tube out, because he is sounding very congested and the tube might be aggravating that and making more difficult for him to breathe.

They uped his feeding again, and now if he eats between 64 and 74 ml in each "seating," that the tube will be gone for good -- Bridget said that it is a chance that he is not finishing his bottles becuase he has a harder time breathing, so if the tube is out he might be able to eat it all...

So, keep your fingers and toes crossed!!!!

-

Mais Boas Notícias & More Great News

No 1o., a sandra acalma o pequeno boquirroto cantando, e no 2o.

-

Antonio had a great night and got to eat all his bottles w/o any major issue, and only got ONE gavage complement -- at 5am, because he did not wake up completely for the feeding and fell asleep with the nipple in his mouth.

The rest of the post is just to present the two videos we made yesterday. In the first, Sandra soothes him singing "Twinkle, Twinkle" and in the second he shows almost all the range of emotions necessary for an actor to get an Oscar -- Hello Mr. Cruise, here we come!

Just another quick update & apenas um update rapidinho

Antonio continues doing well with the new diet, but he had a few accidents, and some large stools. How large? Well, they were large enough for the nurses to decide to use a larger size diaper to keep all in...

He did spit up most of his 9 am feeding, but took all 60 ml of his 1 pm without any major issues.

Other than that, please sit down to hear this: he is weighing 5 Lbs 12.4 Oz!!!

-

100 Dias or Days

-

Yesterday we celebrated Antonio's 100th-day anniversary, or on the flip-side, his 100th day in the NICU. Susan (the nurse practitioner), Bridget, Sandra and I stayed talking by his bed side, reminiscing of his first days and how small and fragile he was not so long ago, and how much he changed in the last few days.

For me, it is almost unbelievable and I still get somewhat emotional when I think of the first time I saw him… but now, like some of the nurses say, he is a big boy and just need to learn how to eat and breathe properly!

Today, Sandra could not go to the hospital as she is feeling a little her throat – it is better safe than sorry. So it was my luck that I could spend a lot of time with him, and to start I was the one that had to change his diaper! When I arrived to his pod, I saw is his face that he was rip, and as soon as I touched him I smelled the bouquet of the damage he was making – I will not get into details, but it weight 39 grams!

After changing his diaper, I got to feed him for the second time. It was funny, because as soon as he saw the bottle on Cathy’s hands, his eyes did not stop following it around and he started to smack his lips, asking for his food.

Antonio wolfed down half of the bottle in “one sitting,” and although he was going fast, he did take some breaks and did not have any problems. I took the bottle and tried burp him, but he did not stop looking at the bottle and – amazingly! – he extended his arms towards the bottle like he was trying to get it from the counter.

After this break, he drank another 20 ml before falling to sleep with the nipple in his mouth.. the pictures in the post are from after I put him in bed after the feeding.

24!

As mentioned, Antonio started to try a bottle-feeding-only diet yesterday. So far, he is doing well, with only a few brady episodes, and only needing a few top-offs via gavage.

He did very well on the breast again yesterday evening, latching on and nursing for about 35 minutes. After that, he fell asleep and slept well for a couple of hours before waking up for his 8pm cares.

Since last night they changed the cares times to accommodate a wider feeding schedule: Antonio now is getting 60 cc of his concoction (milk, milk fortifier and rice cereal) every four hours -- That's 2 ounces!!

He was able to get half of his first feeding of the night from the bottle at 8 pm. Then, at 12am, he was able to drink 45 ml and at 5 am he got the entire 60 ml, without any problems!

So, Dr. Mike's plan is to see if Antonio can get all his feedings from the bottle for the next 24 hours, and if he does well, they will take his endo-feeding tube tomorrow! That is a major step on Antonio's journey home (100 days!)

By the way, Kate weighed him last night and he was 5 lbs 8.4 oz - I wonder how much of that is the rice cereal and how big his next stool will be... my apologies to Nurse Cathy in advance, as she is taking care of him today!

--

Just to let you know that Antonio did not start very well on his new diet: At his 11am feeding, he had a major brady episode (HR at 60s and PO2 at 40%), which forced Bridget to give him aditional Oxygen.

In any case, after he came out of it, he ate all his bottle... more, at his 2pm feeding, he took the entire bottle (45 mL) in 5 minutes -- without any problems!

We are going to visit him later, and hopefully he will be OK and latch on without any problems again!

Bolas & Nuts!!!!

I guess that Dr. Bennett probably read my mind, because last Friday she saw me in the waiting area of the NICU and came outside to speak with me about Antonio's hernias... by the way, Dr. Bennett is the sweetest Doctor I ever met (no offense, Dr. Mike!)

Anyway, we got to spend some time talking about that, and he reassured me that, although Antonio's are big, she saw bigger hernias before. She mentioned that the nurses will stop reducing the hernias during his cares, but will continue to check them -- so my understanding is that she is not as worried about them as we are.

The original plan is to have the surgery done after Antonio is discharged from the NICU, perhaps going to another hospital for that before coming home… Dr. Bennett contacted the surgeon that will eventually take care of that, and hopefully he will stop by at the NICU soon to take a look and make his recommendations.

Now let's talk about the latest developments: Antonio got to have his first full feeding from the breast -- again, no pictures, PERVERTS! He had a hard time at the beginning, he would latch on for a little bit, but then he would actually fight, push and arch his back from Sandra, which of course was upsetting her.

Nurse Aileen suggested that Sandra used a silicone nipple shield, which she tried before without success… but she was able to find a smaller size, and it was like magic: Antonio latched on immediately and nursed for about 35 minutes! He only desat’ed one time for a second, and had no problems whatsoever.

That all happened around 6pm on Monday and we were a little worried, because we cannot see or measure how much Antonio actually got from the breast. However, he went right to sleep after the feeding and did not wake up until right before his 8 pm cares, when he got to eat again (gavage feeding), so we think he got enough directly from the source!

We heard today that Antonio slept all through the night – he got a bath early in the evening, a bottle feeding at 11pm, so I guess all these activities tired him up, because he had to be awakened to get a bottle again at 5 am, but he was quite sleepy and fussy. He must have gotten that from his mom, because every morning he fights with the alarms – currently we have four going on to make sure she will get up to pump and go to work on time! Of course, I stay in bed…

In closing, Dr. Mike is back and he made some new changes to Antonio’s routine: Stating today he will be bottle fed only (before it was three times a day), as well as be getting some rice-cereal with his milk, to thicken the formula and help with the reflux.
-

A Dra.

Antonio Brinca com o Móbile / Antonio plays with his mobile

I am not sure if that was his intention, but I am saying it was -- the video below shows little Antonio "trying" to grab the flying animals...

More fat news / Notícias Gordas

Just to let you guys know that out little pork-chop is weighing 5 lbs 5.2 Oz today!!!

We will need to start to collect contributions for his gym merbership soon... We've got to spend quite some time with Antonio last night and this morning, so Antonio is extra happy, not only because he spent some quality time with mommy and daddy, but also becasue his favorite soccer team -- Fluminense -- qualified to the finals of the Carioca Championship in Brazil.

--

Neeeense!

Now lets see some pictures and video of me getting to bottle feed Antonio for the first time. Antonio was pretty high on milk.

Antonio toma um banho & gets a bath too

:0))

It was a great idea to forget the camera at the NICU the other day, because that allows Antonio's favorite nurse to snap these shots of him taking a bath.

Thank you so much Bridget, not only for remembering of the camera and the thoughtfulness of taking the time to take the pictures, but also for taking some great pictures of our little guy!

He always starts his bath by letting everybody in the NICU know that he's not happy about the bubbles (picture 1), but then he realizes that in a few years there will be no woman washing him, so he relaxes and enjoys (picture 2).

:0))

More B'day News & Mais Notícias de Aniversário

Of course that we would not let the date pass without giving him a gift. So, following Nurse Gail's (she always have a greatest ideas!), we purchased a Ocean Wonders Aquarium to be placed on his crib.

The idea is for Antonio to have something that moves to focus his eyes on and start to strengthen the eye muscles and his eye-tracking skills, soothe and help him relax (it plays soft music and rhythmic lights), as well as giving him something to do while he waits to come home -- he must be bored laying there all day, specially now that he spends more and more time awake.

We call it his TV, and we put it up on his crib last night before we left, so we did not have a chance to see how he would react to it. I just called the NICU to see how Antonio is doing today, and Bridget (still his favorite nurse!) said that he adores his TV and that he is always looking at it, mesmerized!

She also told me that he got all his first feeding in the morning orally, and he did great without any brady episodes -- actually the last episode he had was at midnight, and it was a little one!

-

Feliz Aniversário Meu Filho & Happy Birthday My Son

Eu te prometo que não se passará um dia pelo resto da minha vida em que eu não te direi o quanto eu te amo e o quão importante e especial você é para mim e para esse mundão de Deus;

Eu te prometo que tentarei fazer o impossível para te ajudar a superar tudo isso que está passando e o pelo que ainda está por vir;

Eu te prometo que farei o meu melhor para que você cresça uma criança feliz;

Eu te prometo ter com você toda a paciência que eu nunca tive com ninguém, nem comigo mesmo;

Eu te prometo achar tempo todos os dias para brincar, te contar uma história, conversar, ou apenas estar com você;

Eu te prometo que vou fazer tudo que eu possa para tornar esse mundo um pouco melhor para você;

Eu te prometo que te ensinarei a andar de bicicleta, jogar futebol, a taboada (sem tijolo!), soltar pipa, escrever seu nome, dirigir, e tantas outras coisas que são importantes e que você no momento certo vai precisar e querer aprender;

Sometimes I have to stop and think to believe that it has been already three months since you came to this world ... so many days passed, so many things have already happened, but it still seems that was yesterday when I saw you as that teeny and fragile little person laying in the incubator, fighting for your life.

After seeing everything that you went through in the last three months, the only thing I wanted was for you to be able to understand how much I love you. Not even if I was a writer or a scholar, I would be able to describe my feelings and the emotions that I felt (and feel) each day that I saw how much you’ve grown and you surpassing all the expectations they had for you so far.

On your three-month anniversary, these are my gifts and my promises to you, my son:

I promise that there will be not a single day for the rest of my life that I will not say to you how much I love you and how important and special you are for me and for this world;

I promise that I will try to do everything possible to help you go through these and all the problems and bad times that are still to come;

I promise that I will make my best so that you grow to be a happy child;

I promise to have all the patience with you that I never had with anybody else, not even with myself;

I promise to find the time every day to play, to tell you a history, to talk or to simply hang out with you;

I promise that I will try to do everything possible to make this a better world for you;

I promise that I will teach to you to ride a bicycle, play soccer, add and subtract (without the help od a brick!), fly a kite, write your name, and all the other stuff that are important and that you will want to learn when the the time is right for you;

I promise to you that I will always be your father, and your best friend for as long as you want...

My son, thank you for making my life whole with just a smile.

Grandma Arlene Holds the Baby for the 1st Time / Vovó Arlene Segura o Bebê pela 1a. Vez

After three months of waiting, Arlene was able to hold our little Antonio for the first time on Saturday night. I was not there to see it (the NICU only allows two people at a time on his bed side), but based on the pictures both the baby and the grandma survived without a scratch... :o))

After Arlene left, I was able to come in and Antonio was nuzzling and getting all confy with Sandra, and we got to hang out for a while ... until he decided to act up a little, and had one of his bradycardia episodes -- but the nurses guided us to make him snap out of it. Sandra took these pictures of me holding Antonio after the episode.
