Bolas & Nuts!!!!

I guess that Dr. Bennett probably read my mind, because last Friday she saw me in the waiting area of the NICU and came outside to speak with me about Antonio's hernias... by the way, Dr. Bennett is the sweetest Doctor I ever met (no offense, Dr. Mike!)

Anyway, we got to spend some time talking about that, and he reassured me that, although Antonio's are big, she saw bigger hernias before. She mentioned that the nurses will stop reducing the hernias during his cares, but will continue to check them -- so my understanding is that she is not as worried about them as we are.

The original plan is to have the surgery done after Antonio is discharged from the NICU, perhaps going to another hospital for that before coming home… Dr. Bennett contacted the surgeon that will eventually take care of that, and hopefully he will stop by at the NICU soon to take a look and make his recommendations.

Now let's talk about the latest developments: Antonio got to have his first full feeding from the breast -- again, no pictures, PERVERTS! He had a hard time at the beginning, he would latch on for a little bit, but then he would actually fight, push and arch his back from Sandra, which of course was upsetting her.

Nurse Aileen suggested that Sandra used a silicone nipple shield, which she tried before without success… but she was able to find a smaller size, and it was like magic: Antonio latched on immediately and nursed for about 35 minutes! He only desat’ed one time for a second, and had no problems whatsoever.

That all happened around 6pm on Monday and we were a little worried, because we cannot see or measure how much Antonio actually got from the breast. However, he went right to sleep after the feeding and did not wake up until right before his 8 pm cares, when he got to eat again (gavage feeding), so we think he got enough directly from the source!

We heard today that Antonio slept all through the night – he got a bath early in the evening, a bottle feeding at 11pm, so I guess all these activities tired him up, because he had to be awakened to get a bottle again at 5 am, but he was quite sleepy and fussy. He must have gotten that from his mom, because every morning he fights with the alarms – currently we have four going on to make sure she will get up to pump and go to work on time! Of course, I stay in bed…

In closing, Dr. Mike is back and he made some new changes to Antonio’s routine: Stating today he will be bottle fed only (before it was three times a day), as well as be getting some rice-cereal with his milk, to thicken the formula and help with the reflux.

Eu acho que a Dra. Bennett leu meus pensamentos, porque na última sexta-feira ela me viu na área de espera da NICU e a veio falar comigo sobre hérnias do Antonio... Nós conversamos bastante sobre aquilo e ela nos tranquilizou que, embora as do Antonio sejam grandes, ela já viu hérnias muito maires!

Ela também mencionou que as enfermeiras não vão mais “reduzir” as hérnias durante os cuidados do Antonio, mas que continuarão checá-las todos os dias – então eu acho que eles não estão mais tão preocupados com as bolas quanto nós estamos.

A plano original é pro Antonio ter a cirurgia depois que receber alta da NICU, talvez ir diretamente para outro hospital para a cirúrgia antes de vir para casa... A Dra. Bennett ja entour em contacto com cirurgião especialista que eventualmente fará a cirurgia, pedindo para que ele d6e uma passada pra examinar of Antonio e dar suas recomendações.


Vamos falar agora sobre os últimos acontecimentos no NICU: Ontem o Antonio comeu sua primeira refeição completa no peito – mais uma vez, não postaremos nenhuma foto retratos, seus TARADOS! No início foi um pouco frustante, com ele pegando no peito um pouquinho, para logo depois largar e começar brigar com a Sandra enpurrando o peito e afastando a cabeça, o que com certeza a chateava.

Mas, estra a enferemeira Aileen e nos traz um nipple shielded silicone (bico protetor de mamilo?), que a Sandra havia tentado antes sem sucesso... mas a enfermeira achou um menorzinho e foi como mágica: o Antonio pegou no peito imediatamente e mamou por quase 35 minutos! Nesse tempo todo, ele só teve um probleminha com a respiração que durou menos de um segundo.

Isso aconteceu por volta das 18:00 de segunda-feira e em nós estavamos um pouco apreensivos porque não ha como medir ou estimar o quanto o Antonio realmente mamou do peito. Entretanto, ele caiu no sono logo após o jantar, e não acordou até as 8 da noite quando era pra ele receber seus cuidados de higiêne e quando receber a próxima alimentação (pelo tubo). Então eu acho que ele comeu o bastente diretamente da fonte!

Hoje pela manhã recebemos a notícia de que o Antonio dormiu toda a noite – ele levou um banho às 20:00 e mamou da mamadeira às 23:00, assim que eu suponho que todas as atividades de ontem o cansaram muito, pois ele teve que ser acordado às 5 da manhã para mamar mais uma vez... a enfermeira nos disse que ele estava como um sonânbulo irritado. Ele deve ter herdado isso da mão, pois todo dia ela faz tudo sempre igual, coloca e briga com os despertadores – ultimamente nós temos quatro, pra garantir que ela vai acordar na hora certa de ordenhar ou ir pro trabalho! Naturalmente, eu fico na cama....

Pra terminar, Dr. Mike está de volta e fêz algumas mudanças na rotina do Antonio: Começando hoje, eles tentarão mais uma vez alimentá-lo apenas com a mamadeira (antes isso era 3 vezaes ao dia, além de também receber um pouquinho de farinha de arroz no leitinho, para engrossar a fórmula e ajudar com o refluxo.
