So many changes... Quantas mudanças!

Bem, é melhor você se sentar pois esse post será longo... O Dr. Mike chegou com a corda toda do fim de semana e fez mudanças radicais (que eu já estava esperando!) na rotina do Antonio.

Vamos começar pela mais fácil de entender: O Antonio estava instalado numa incubadeira normal desde o fim de fevereiro, mas eu estava achando que ela estava ficando pequena pro Antonio -- Aliás algumas enfermeiras também já haviam comentado várias vezes que tava na hora de mudarem ele para um bercinho...

Então hoje pela manhã eles resolveram graduá-lo para um berço... berço, não berção -- por causa dos equipamentos que o Antonio ainda precisa, eles resolveram colocá-lo num berço infantil da pediatria para dar mais espaço.


Eu sei que é bem feinho o berço, parece até uma jaula de zoológico, mas nós podemos enfeitá-lo um pouquinho! De qualquer forma, para nós isso não é importante... por mais que eu me esforçasse, não descrever o quão feliz a Sandra e eu estamos por essa pequena mudança de ambiente. Não só por que agora é muito mais fácil acessá-lo, mas principalmente por que isso significa que o Antonio já consegue manter sua temperatura, o que é uma das coisas mais importantes que ele precisa superar antes de poder ir pra casa!


Uma outra coisa que ele precisa superar -- ou aprender -- é a se alimentar pela boca. Nesse quesito, os médicos consolidaram pela última vez a alimentação do Antonio, e desde ontem ele está recebendo 27 mL de leite por uma hora e tem três horas de "descanso", o que é o regime "normal" para um recem nascido.

Até agora ele está indo bem nesse novo regime, mas o número de vezes e quantidade de leite que regurgita aumentou bastante, devido ao estômago dele ainda ser pequenino e ainda precisa se acostumar com o volume maior de leite que ele está recebendo.

Quanto ao último quesito necessário para o Antonio vir pra casa -- respirar por conta própria -- também desde ontem ele voltou a receber apenas a pressão de ar contínua (CPAP) e não mais nenhuma respiração adicional pelo ventilador. Além disso, hoje pela manhã o Dr. Mike também resolveu tentar a cânula nasal mais uma vez... daqui a pouco eu vou ligar pro hospital e ver como ele se saiu.

De resto, como coloquei no post de ontem ele agora está com 40 cm de comprimento e pesando 1.604 gramas... a cabecinha dele está com 29 cm de circunferência.


Well, it is better you to sit down because this will be a long post... Dr. Mike arrived from the weekend in good mood and decided to make several radical changes (that we were waiting and hoping for!) to Antonio's routine.

So, let's start with the easiest one to explain: As you know, since February 29, Antonio's living quarters was a regular incubator, but lately I was thinking that it was getting a little too cramped for him in there -- some of the nurses had also commented that it was time for him to move on to the bassinette...

So we were happy to hear that yesterday morning they decided to graduate him and he gets to "live" in a cradle... but not a little cradle, a large one! (see the pcitures above). Because of all the equipment that Antonio still requires, they decided to place him in pediatric cradle so he can have more space.


Yes, we know that the cradle is quite ugly, even that it looks like a zoo cage, but Sandra and I can decorate it a bit ... and by all means, that is not important at all for us! Because, no matter how hard I try, there is no way for me to explain how happy Sandra and I are for this small environmental change. Not only becuase it is much easier to have access to Antonio, but mainly becuase this change means that he is able to maintain his temperature, and that is a major milestone he needed to achieve before being able to come home!

Another milestone for him is regarding his feeding, as he needs to "learn" to be fed normally by the mouth. To get him in that direction, the doctors consolidated his feeding for the last time yesterday, and now Antonio is receiving 27 mL of milk for one hour and has three hours of "rest," which would be the "normal" regimen for a newborn.

So far, so good and Antonio is tolarating well his new diet, but the number and volume of his spit ups increased, since his stomach is teeny and needs to get used with the higher volume of milk that Antonio is receiving.

The last and the more complicated issue we need to solve before Antonio gets the green light for him to come home is for him to breathe on his own. So to get him ready, also since yesterday, he is back to receiving only the CPAP and no more additional breaths by the ventilator. In addition, since this morning, Dr. Mike also decided to try the nasal cannula for four hours a day.... in a little bit we will call the hospital to check how he is doing on that.

And to finish, as I posted yesterday, Antonio is now 15" 3/4 long and weighs 3 lbs. 8.6 oz... his head is 11" 3/4 around.
