Update 1/22/08

Good morning to all,

Just wanted to post a quick update on Antonio's progress. We visited with him yesterday afternoon and found that not much had changed -- except his size... He grew 3/4 of an inch and is now 13 inches long!!! It is too difficult to get an accurate weight though, because he is attached to so much equipment.

His breathing is still stable on the oscillating ventilator and they expect that he will be on it for a while longer (no timeline but they say as long as he needs it) before transitioning back to the regular ventilator and then to the CPAP.

They began his feedings again at 1 cc per hour and today have increased this to 2.5 cc per hour. He received another blood transfusion yesterday which is still normal for preemies because they do not have much blood and when they draw some for tests they have to replace it.


One of his nurses suggested that we get a "heartbeat bear" and take the heartbeat out to put into his incubator for calming him down after his care times when he gets so mad. The heartbeat bear has a little box in it that mimics the sound of a baby's mother's heartbeat when they are in the uterus because it tends to calm them down and remind them of more peaceful times. So he now has a heartbeat in his incubator.

The same nurse suggested that we start to get the dogs ready for Antonio by taking the sheepskin type fabric that is in his incubator home for the dogs to smell. So we brought it home twice and the dogs got so excited when they smelled it!!! Phoebe likes it so much that she sleeps on them as well :-).

Bom dia a todos!

Apenas pra deixar mais um update sobre o Antonio. Nós o visitamos novamente ontem `a tarde, e graça a Deus, nada havia mudado drasticamente -- exceto seu tamanho... O Antonio cresceu quase 2 cm desde seu nascimento, e é agora esta medindo 33 cm de comprimento!!! Ainda 'e dif'icil pesa-lo por causa de todos os equipamento a que ele está ligado. mas no olhometro ele parece mais gorduchinho....

A rspiração dele continua estável desde que passaram a usar o oscilador e por isso o prognoóstico é par ele continuar nesse aparelho por mais algum tempo antes de voltar ao ventilador regular e, quem sabe, então ao CPAP.

De[pos de 3-4 dias, recomeçaram à alimentá-lo com leite materno, dando 1 mL por hora, e passando a 2.5 mL desde hoje pela manhã! Ontem ele recebeu mais uma transfusão de sangue ontem, o que é mormal pros prematuros uma vez que precisam fazer vários exames e eles não tem muito sangue originalmente.

Gail, a segunda enfermeira favorita do Antonio, continua a nos dar alguam dicas .... a ultima foi de compar um "Heartbeat Bear"(um ursinho de pelúcia que tem um gravador que "toca" o som dos batimento de coração que imita os da mãe) e tirarmos o gravador pra colocar na incubadeira -- dess forma, por escutar batimentos ele se "lembrará" do ventre e se alcamará um pouco mais, principalmente quando precisam mexer nele.

Ela tembém nos sugeriu trazermos um pedaço da "pele de carneiro" que involve o fundo da incubabeira para casa, pas dar ao cachorros. Dessa forma eles se costumar~~ao com o cheiro do Antonio, tendo menos problemas para se adaptar ao novo morador... Fizemos isso ontem, e a Sassy e Phoebe ficaram loucos cheirando a pele e a Phoebe gostou tanto disso, que agora a usa como caminha....:-)
